Why AI forgets: context, memory and new chats
Conversation history, saved memory and a project file are different things. Here is how to carry important decisions into a new chat without relying on guesswork.
An AI system may miss a detail if it is absent from the available context or is not selected as relevant information. Saved memory can help you continue work, but it is not an exact copy of every past conversation. Important projects benefit from an explicit record of current decisions.
Microsoft describes agent context as available information such as history, files, instructions and tool results. In VS Code, long histories may be condensed, which can summarize details. [1] Other products may manage this differently.
Three different sources of information
Current context is what the system can use for this request. It is not necessarily everything you have ever told it.
Memory is a mechanism for using saved information across conversations. OpenAI says ChatGPT memory does not retain every detail, and its features depend on the account and settings. [2]
A project file is a document you can review and correct. Its existence alone does not prove that the system received or read it in this conversation.
I would avoid putting all three into one box labelled “surely it remembers.”
Fictional example: an exhibition stand
In an earlier conversation, you agreed that the stand is small, transport is on foot and heavy structures are excluded. A week later, you open a new chat and ask for design ideas.
Without those constraints, the suggested design may be unsuitable. Provide a short handover and refer to the current file if it is actually accessible in that environment.
A context handover template
Copy and adapt:
Project: exhibition stand.
Goal: choose a portable design.
Agreed: the equipment must be carried by hand.
Constraints: no heavy modules; budget not yet approved.
Current version: project description dated [date].
Next step: propose three options with advantages and limitations.
Do not do yet: purchases or orders.
If the required file is unavailable, say so before drawing conclusions from it.
This is an editorial template. It makes the inputs explicit; it does not guarantee a flawless continuation.
When to start a new chat
A new conversation can help with a separate subject or when the previous discussion contains many unrelated topics. Before continuing a project, prepare a short handover. Approved decisions and open questions may be more useful than the entire transcript.
Update the main project document as decisions change. Distinguish what was discussed from what was approved.
Check that the context was received
Ask the system to list the starting conditions and missing information before proposing a solution. Check that list yourself. “I remember everything” is less useful than a concrete list of constraints.
Use the memory controls available to your account; not everyone has identical settings. Keep irreplaceable project decisions in an explicit record regardless.
